And sow on

It’s time for harvesting lettuce and other salads, radish and early potatoes. Nip out the side shoots on tomato plants and give them a feed and well ventilate those in a greenhouse. Watering a-plenty is likely needed now with a good soaking on the vegetables every few days or even more frequently in very high temperatures.

Fine spray seedlings and don’t forget any vegetables you’ve planted in containers – it’s easily done. Cabbages and sprouts will be more tolerant and need less water. Harvest broad beans and asparagus and make last sowings of French beans and quick maturing peas.

Lift autumn-sown onions as you need them and after the frosts plant out tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and sweet corn. Lift potatoes as well when you need them and pick your peas when pods mature. Enjoy your feast of summer vegetables and salads.
