And sow on

Succession sowing brings you a plentiful and regular supply of fresh vegetables through spring and summer. Somehow there’s a greater delight in enjoying the crunch of home grown lettuce, salad onions, carrots and radishes on a warm summer evening, compared to taking them out of a plastic bag.

The only recycling you have to worry about is putting any leftovers (unlikely) on the compost. Cabbages and spring onions you sowed last year should be ready now.

So on with the sowing of French beans, runner beans, sweet corn, courgettes and marrows and those already mentioned above.  Sow peas and parsley and late broccoli, cucumbers and pumpkins and beetroot galore.

  • Harvest asparagus from established beds
  • Sow Savoy cabbage and winter cabbage in nursery rows
  • Earth-up potatoes
  • Sow half-hardy runner beans
  • Sow maincrop varieties of carrots for the autumn
  • Make outdoor sowings of cauliflowers, cabbages, Brussels sprouts, parsnips, Swedes, turnips
  • Harvest those lovely home-grown potatoes
  • Buy and grow on tomato plants if you didn’t sow seeds
